M2 Self-Install Guide

This document will walk you through self-installing a MarketSpark M2

Overview

Installation of a custom hardware bundle solution to convert pre-existing copper lines with a wireless/cellular solution.

You will need the following tools for a successful install.

  • Laptop

  • Butt set

  • Low voltage tone generator and probe

  • Crimping tool punch down with 66/110 blake

  • Zip ties / wire consolidation accessories

  • Cross connect wire

  • Label maker

  • Surface mount biscuit jack or dial outlet faceplate

  • USB to serial / DB9 adapter

  • Serial to serial cable

  • Cat 5 patch cables

  • Rack / wall screws

  • RJ45 / 11 connectors

  • RJ45 / 11 crimp tool

  • PC toolset (screwdrivers, etc.)

  • Laptop

The MarketSpark managed service leverages a hardware solution that includes a variety of components. 

The MarketSpark M2 solution consists of the following components encased in a plastic enclosure:

  1. UPS w/ 1 or more batteries

  2. Cellular Router

  3. 1 or more 4 or 8-port ATAs

  4. 66 Block

  5. External Antenna

  6. Connective cabling

Connect and Register MarketSpark M2 Unit

Power Up

Prior to mounting, power on the equipment. Look for a green System Status LED light to illuminate.

  1. Locate the battery and UPS (bubble-wrapped together).

    1. Slide the battery and UPS assembly into the pre-installed mount inside the enclosure.

  1. Plug in the external power cable and internal wiring harness to the UPS.

  1. Verify that all power connections between the UPS and other devices are secure.

  1. Ensure the battery and UPS are securely fastened to each other and the mount.

    1. Swing L-bracket into place to properly secure battery, tightening screw.

If no LEDS are seen within 30 seconds, check the power connections to the individual components and restart UPS.

Monitor Lights

  1. The router may take up to 10 minutes to fully connect. Once connected confirm the following:

    1. All LAN and WAN LEDs will turn on for 2 seconds on the cellular router.

    2. LAN LED on the ATA will briefly flash green, and the power LED will turn red.

    3. After 3-5 seconds, the SIM 1 LED on the cellular adapter will illuminate.

    4. After 20-30 seconds the status LED on the cellular router will turn green and all LAN ports will flash.

    5. Connected LAN port to the router will turn on, following the LAN port on the ATA.

    6. Cellular device is now attempting to establish a cellular connection.

    7. After 1-5 minutes the cellular LEDs turn green if there is sufficient signal quality.

      1. If only 1 light is green, you will need to move the box and / or antenna to a place with a better RF signal.

If any of the ports are not able to successfully register, contact MarketSpark Support to resolve.

Mount Unit

  1. The M2 unit comes with mounting screws to secure the enclosure to the wall.

Things to consider

  • The unit will need a wall to support approximately 20 lbs. Ordinary drywall will not work. 

  • The unit should be mounted within 12 ft. of a power source and with consideration of cross-connections.

  • Keep away from metal conduits and fluorescent lights.

  1. Unplug the unit.

  2. Mount the unit as high as possible on the wall. Leave room above for the antenna.

  3. Mount the antenna above the unit as close to the external wall for the best signal quality.

Punch Down

  1. After provisioning the M2 unit, locate the on-premises analog lines.

    1. Following the work order instructions, relocate the analog lines from the site’s 66-block and connect to the unit’s 66-block.

  1. Make sure you are using the correct wires and the proper tool when punching down wires, so there is no extra wiring hanging down below the punch down point

  2. Repeat this for each line going down the 66 pair block. Make sure you are using the correct wiring color order when punching down.

  3. White wire first, colored wire second

    1. 4-pair CAT5e color scheme will always follow this pattern on the ports and the 66 pair block:

      1. Blue

      2. Orange

      3. Green

      4. Brown

  4. Insert bridge clips on the center teeth of punched down lines

  5. Next on the other end of the CAT5e running to the 66 pair block, separate the first wire into two strands.

  6. Then, feed the white strand through the top tooth of the line (each line uses two rows of teeth). Punch down the line. Next, feed the solid strand through the bottom tooth of the line and punch down.

Incorrect connects may result in damage to the unit.

Moving lines associate with an alarm panel may generate a line trouble. It is therefore critical that only the proper licensed individual who is familiar with and has proper access to the on-premises burglar or fire panels, the central station information and the communications protocols should move, and test, those lines.

Make sure the wire is secure within each tooth and is making wire to metal contact. Do not overtighten. If necessary, perform an end-to-end continuity check to a proper connection.

Battery

  1. Connect the battery pack to the UPS by pushing the top section of the UPS away from the bottom to expose the bracket.

  2. Insert the battery pack into the bracket and slide down to ensure a secure connection.

  3. Next insert the top UPS section to the battery stack and slide down to securely assemble the UPS. The unit can now be powered on.

  4. Confirm that wires from the UPS run to the cellular router and the ATA are still secure, and all the connectors are properly secured. If necessary, re-attach any loose wires.

Testing

Once the physical installation is completed, the unit is activated by MarketSpark and ready for testing.

  1. Check that the PWR LED on the ATA is green on the ATA component.

  2. Perform a line continuity check and check for a dial tone at each of the connected on-premises analog phone devices.

  3. Perform a test call on all service lines – both inbound and outbound.

  4. If so desired, the installer may dial 933 from any voice line to check the status of the pre-configured E911 location and match it with the address on the work order.

Testing phone lines assigned to fire or burglary alarm functions should NOT be done with any other device than the panel. Failure to adhere to this requirement can cause the pre-configured functionality to fail.

A simple way to test with a panel is to unhook the battery and see if the panel generates a low-voltage alarm. As verified by the monitoring company or central station.

Only qualified alarm panel technicians should perform this testing.

Exit Criteria

  • Equipment should be mounted securely.

  • Device should be mounted in an accessible location, however the higher the better.

  • Device should be mounted in an area where signal strength will not be negatively impacted (by other electrical devices, within mental enclosures, etc.).

  • Device should be level; all provided screws should be used and be tightly secure.

  • Wires should be consolidated and neatly tied and secured.

  • Power cord should be plugged into designated outlet on your rack mounted UPS unit. Power strip or extension cord should never be used.

  • 66-block should be properly labelled with phone number and purpose.

  • Wiring should be securely punched down in available slots starting from top to bottom.

  • Wiring should be aligned and securely punched down to the corresponding slot on the other side of the block.
